Hello and welcome back to Spring Term 2 at Fountains. Nights are getting longer, the weather will be getting warmer; spring is on its way. We hope you had a fantastic half term and your batteries are re-charged because we have an exciting term ahead of us!
Last term, Octopus class engaged in their topic, ‘Road Trip to USA’. They loved learning about the American culture and enjoyed participating in range activities, which are popular over in USA. Pupils developed their gross motor skills by participating in basketball during PE lesson. We looked at different types of passes and different ways of travelling to help develop some of our key skills.
In some of our project lessons pupils were given the opportunity to measure ingredients and choose toppings when making their own American pancake. We then developed our writing and comprehension skills by reflecting on this experience. Pupils were able to write up the ingredients and method we used.
Moreover into our Maths topic. We continued to work towards developing our addition and subtraction. Pupils showed they were able to write number statements to match part-whole models. We also continued to develop our understanding of adding and subtracting numbers using the column method.
Our new topic in project for this term is called ‘Wriggle and Crawl’. Sweep your nets in ponds and lift up logs to see who’s home. We will be given the opportunity to set up a mini-beast laboratory and observe their every move. We will learn about bees, worms and butterflies too to show an understanding of a food chain and see who eats who? We will also be given exciting opportunities to carry out investigations to find out things such as far a snail travels in a day and how a spider catches its prey.
Our Maths topics this term are; Shape, Place value and Fractions. The children will be exploring the properties of 3D shapes whereas some of us will continue to demonstrate their ability to subitise when counting Tens and Ones, making comparisons using inequality symbols. We will also look to extend our learning as pupils will be encouraged to recognise, find, name and write fractions 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity.
In our SPAG lessons this term, the children will be building on their understanding of digraphs and consonant clusters to spell new words to help work towards writing sentences independently. Pupils will continue to learn about different types of punctuation used in our writing and will be encouraged to apply their knowledge daily in their writing.
